Subhranshu Maitra is a renowned translator and writer. Born on April 9, 1952, hailing from Kolkata, Maitra’s foray into the world of translation began with his debut as a translator of notable works by authors like Ernest Hemingway and Howard Fast, translating them into Bengali. Some of his notable works include Gaandharva: Poems of Sankha Ghosh, published by Paschimbanga Bangla Academy, and Wrong Number and Other Stories of Mahasweta Devi, published by Seagull, Calcutta. He is also the author of Here & Beyond, an anthology of Bengali short stories written by women in the first half of the 20th Century, and The Jibanananda World, an anthology of literary essays on Jibanananda’s poetry and prose translated into English. He has translated Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novella Parineeta into English under the title The Betrothed.
